It’s probably a safe bet to take to say that just about everyone you know engages in some sort of instant online messaging. It has made communication much easier as well as fun and exciting. However there are a few things to keep in mind such as online messaging etiquette.
Many people think that since this type of messaging is almost semi-anonymous and non-personal that certain manners and etiquette can be thrown out the window. Nothing is more disheartening that to receive a message that could easily be misconstrued if only because a proper greeting wasn’t attached. So here’s a look at some of the ways to maintain good etiquette while chatting online.
Use the frequently asked questions part of your individual messaging program. This section will provide the basics of online messaging etiquette as well as any specific rules and regulations that apply to that particular messaging platform.
Make sure you always use a greeting for your first contact. Don’t just jump in and start chatting. Use a salutation such as “hello” or “hi there,” so it makes the communication much more personal.
If one of your online contacts has posted a “do not disturb” or other such online status, respect that and leave him or her alone. That person could be involved in another activity that won’t allow for chatting or other such activities.
Don’t send messages to people in the workplace unless you know that is OK. Also, don’t send inappropriate or private messages unless you know that contact is at their desk.
